WHAT TO EXPECT

Welcome! We are so happy you’re here. We can’t wait to dance with you!

Whether you are joining us in-person or online, here you will find everything you need to get started, including answers to frequently asked questions.

FOR ALL CLASSES

  • All of our classes incorporate the following elements and are woven together using choreography: increasing range of motion, core strength, balance, posture and gracefulness, fluidity, rhythm and coordination, expression, and fun!

Wear clothing that allows you to move without restriction, and shoes that are supportive and comfortable. If dancing at home, please feel free to be barefoot!

  • No! Even if you have never danced before but you are interested in trying, the DWP program and our dance classes are for you.

  • Care partners and family members are welcome to attend the class if a dancer requires more personalized assistance, but are not required. If you are attending in-person, DWP has well-trained volunteers to help those who need a little extra support.

  • Our online and in-person dance classes are taught by DWP instructors who are trained in the Dance for PD® Method. They are highly skilled and have extensive experience delivering effective, fun, and artistic programming centered on creative self-expression and meaningful connection.

  • We recommend you consult with your doctor prior to starting classes just as you would consult before starting any new exercise program.

  • Yes! You can join us seated, standing, from a hospital bed, wheelchair, or using a walker. Our program is accessible, safe, and welcoming for everyone. Don’t feel like dancing? Join us to enjoy the music!

  • No problem! Come to class when you are able. We will always have a spot for you!

FOR ONLINE CLASSES

  • When you register for your online dance class, you will receive a confirmation email with the date and time of the class, and also a ZOOM link. You will use the same ZOOM link for every class at this day and time. We encourage you to “star” or “save” the link for easy access. Not sure how to do that? No problem! Watch this short video with all of the steps.

    HOW TO SAVE ZOOM LINK

  • DWP’s online dance classes are hosted on Zoom. To prepare for your online class, please follow these steps:

    • Be sure you have the most recent version of Zoom installed on the device you will be joining the class from. You can download Zoom here:

      Download Zoom

    • Once you register for your online dance class, you will receive a confirmation email with a Zoom link. This link will be the same for every class on the day and time that you registered for.

    • Give yourself a few extra minutes before each class to make sure that you are connected to the internet and that no Zoom updates are required.

    • Simply click on the Zoom link for the class and follow the prompts.

  • A chair will be used for the warm-up or as needed throughout the class. Choose a chair that is stable, supportive, and comfortable, such as a kitchen or dining room chair. Ensure that your chair does not have wheels.

  • Whether you are seated or standing, be sure that you have enough space for your arms and legs to move freely in your fullest expression!

  • You are welcome to turn your camera on or keep it off — whatever makes you the most comfortable.

  • 15 minutes before and after class, we come together as a virtual community to chat as a group. You are welcome to log in early and stay on for 15 minutes after so that we can all get to know each other better! Every other Tuesday we host a special informal 30-minute “Slice of Life” presentation where a member of our online community volunteers to share a story, life experience, hobby, and/or passion. This is a wonderful way for all of us to get to know one another better, and possibly learn something new!
