Dear DWP Community,

It has been a busy little while at Dancing with Parkinson's as we continue to reach farther and deeper into new communities to share the joy and benefits of dance with seniors and people living with Parkinson's disease from all walks of life, coast to coast, and around the world. Every day it becomes even more apparent that the daily dance classes not only get us moving, but provide a place to forge friendships and lean into a true sense of community.

DWP's free, online Daily Dance Connect truly is a remarkable offering and unlike any other anywhere in the world. It is an honour to play this role, and we take our responsibility to show up each and every day very seriously. We are more committed than ever to ensure that all vulnerable individuals, regardless of age and circumstance, have the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of movement and self-expression, at no cost, from exactly where they are.

This past month, Parkinson's Awareness Month, reminded us of the power of community and partnership. We are grateful to be working with important organizations who feel the same passion as we do to ensure that we are reaching marginalized, isolated populations through easy access to regular, high quality, daily programming.

And so with our sights set on changing the world one dance class at a time, we remain passionate about the limitless potential of dance to offer joy and strength, defy limitations imposed by illness and adversity, and to create connection against all odds.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Let's dance,

GIVE THE GIFT OF DANCE THIS MOTHER'S DAY

98-year old Sophia has a special connection to music and artistry. She is an incredible singer, however, as we shared during our “Look of…” series, her life experience instilled a fear of speaking, and of most forms of self-expression including singing. (To read Sophia’s story, click here.)

Over time, Sophia reconnected with her passion, and her journey to express herself has continued through discovering Dancing with Parkinson’s. Sophia joins us at the in-person class at Trinity St. Paul where she benefits greatly from listening to the music and connecting with the community. Her daughter, Mary, is her primary caregiver and is committed to bringing Sophia to Trinity as often as she can. When asked what motivates her to build the DWP class into Sophia’s day, Mary says “being with others and enjoying the music lights mum up and calms her down. I can tell when Mum is happy, and she is most happy when she is listening to music. There is a sparkle in her eye.” And for Mary, there is nothing more important. “When Mum is happy, the world is good.”

This Mother’s Day, share the joy and benefits of dance and connection with mothers living with PD by making a donation to Dancing with Parkinson’s. In doing so, you are helping to keep DWP classes free of charge for all who wish to join us online or in-person to move together to music.

PARKINSON'S AWARENESS MONTH

It was such an honour celebrate Parkinson's Awareness Month in such a wide variety of ways with so many of you. The opportunity to connect with partners and participants through diverse art forms reminds us that we do so much more than dance! Read on for a look back on how we engaged our community through the written word, movement and song.

DWP and Parkinson Canada Dance to Slow Emotion in Yonge Dundas Square

It was such a privilege to help kick off World Parkinson’s Day celebrations at Yonge Dundas Square leading the crowd in the iconic “Martha and the Muffins” hit, “Echo Beach”!

DWP was thrilled to dance to the launch of Martha and Company’s new song, “Slow Emotion”, a collaborative piece by Martha and her team, featuring backup vocals by people living with PD.

“Slow Emotion” was released on World Parkinson’s Day (April 11th, 2024) with the important and heartfelt message that life and creativity do not end with a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

Ever since April 11th, the DWP community has been enjoying Martha and Company's powerful song and learning the choreography during our in-person and online classes. There is no doubt that "Slow Emotion" has become a class favourite — we look forward to dancing to it together for a very long time to come. To watch the reel of our dancers enjoying this meaningful piece, click here.

Thank you to Martha Johnson and team for sharing your vision and your artistry with us, to Parkinson Canada for the opportunity to share the joy and benefits of dance, and to all of the dancers for dancing with us in the rain!

DWP, U-Turn Parkinson's and PD Avengers Come Together to Recognize World Parkinson's Day

On Thursday, April 11th, World Parkinson’s Day, DWP and two of our very important partners, U-Turn Parkinson’s and PD Avengers, joined forces with five other like-minded organizations to share the benefits of movement and connection. This special online event featured presentations and demonstrations from organizations with a focus on services for people living with PD. We were thrilled to connect and share a wide variety of online movement and exercise programs that are available from the comfort of home.

A Poetry Inspired Slice of Life

In addition to being Parkinson's Awareness Month, April is also National Poetry Month — a celebration of the role of poets’ and poetry in our culture.

As part of our efforts to engage our dance community through various arts initiatives, DWP hosted a special “Slice of Life” on April 9th. We invited DWP dancers from around the world to share a poem that is meaningful to them.

We thoroughly enjoyed hearing from each of our five readers whose selections offered a special glimpse into what moves them.

Thank you to Nancy, Richard, Ana Maria, Mohammed and Ruth for so generously sharing your poetry with us. Your words have left a lasting impression on us all.

Click here to listen to our dancers recite their poems. Enjoy!
Poems:
• Nancy recited “Come Dance with Me”, by Nancy
• Richard recited “Canadian Angels”, by Lorna Crozier
• Ana Maria recited “Esperanza”, by Alexis Valdes
• Mohammed recited “TCE”, by Mohammed
• Ruth recited “Sea Fever”, by John Masefield

MOMENTS OF MAGIC
The Look of...Community!

There were so many moments of magic captured throughout Parkinson's Awareness Month, at the special events we attended, the demonstration sessions we led, and in our weekly classes. We love to see the DWP community making these powerful connections with teachers, partners and each other.

It was such a treat having Paloma lead the Daily Dance Connect one recent Friday, and for baby Seun to join in for a few songs! We can already tell he's a dancer at heart as he settled right into moving to the music. Click here to enjoy a few moments of the sweet mother-son duo dancing together.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

DWP Offers Active Living Programs with Communities in Need

In partnership with the Neighbours Project, an initiative of the Health Commons Solutions Lab, DWP has been offering in-person classes for older adults to experience social connection and community through dance and movement. We have been working with the Neighbours Project to deliver active living programming in two ethnically diverse regions in Toronto that have been adversely impacted by COVID-19: North York and Downtown East.

DWP is actively involved in sharing our experience working with people living with Parkinson’s and seniors in order to help inform program design for the Neighbours Project initiatives. Learnings from North York are being implemented in Downtown East where DWP is offering in-person classes at two Toronto Public Library locations, as well as for Toronto Seniors Housing communities.

Highlights from our "Slice of Life" Program

We are absolutely delighted to share this very special compilation of some excerpts from a number of our "Slice of Life" presentations from over the years! We are always so inspired by the wide variety of topics our dancers and instructors share. During every "Slice of Life", we are sure to learn fascinating information and get to know each other in a new and special way. These highlights offer just a snapshot of some of the wonderful slices from the lives of the DWP community. To enjoy the "Slice of Life" highlight reel, click here.
Linda Attrill-Wan

Thank you so much to Linda for returning to share another one of her fascinating interests. During her presentation titled "My Treasure Trove", Linda showed us her collection of newspaper clippings and memorabilia, mostly from 1942. Linda has gone to great lengths to learn the history behind her findings and to connect with family members of those captured in the articles. Thank you for sharing, Linda!
In May, we look forward to hearing from one of DWP's teachers, Julia Sauve, who leads our newest in-person class in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

DWP on Radio Canada: Maladie de Parkinson: Les Benefits de la Dance

It was such a special opportunity to speak with Noémie Adivar from Radio-Canada about the benefits of dance for people living with Parkinson's disease. DWP's wonderful friend and regular on the Daily Dance Connect, Glenda Doucet-Boudreau from New Brunswick, shared how dancing has been such an important part of her wellness journey. Sarah Robichaud provided the background on the vision for Dancing with Parkinson's, and Laetitia Clément, one of DWP's beloved teachers who leads the in-person class in Thornhill, (and who also speaks French!), spoke to her experience teaching dance to people living with Parkinson's, and the profound transformation and connection she witnesses every class.
