L’Allegro Movement Project

As part of the 2013 Luminato Festival, dancer and DWP’s founder Sarah Robichaud, dancer and founder of the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) Dance for PD® program, David Leventhal, and MMDG dancers/teaching artists, Lesley Garrison and Uta Takemura, collaborated to create L’Allegro Movement Project. This intergenerational initiative engaged Parkinson’s dancers and local elementary school students from Nelson Mandela Park PS and Winchester PS to explore the expressive vocabulary of Mark Morris’ L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. After 5 months of workshops and rehearsals L’Allegro Movement Project participants performed this innovative dance piece with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Chamber Choir and soloists conducted by Jane Glover, on stage at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.

In addition, a select team of youth filmmakers worked with multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Ella Cooper to investigate the transformative power of dance, and created this short film documenting the collaborative process. The film was screened at the Regent Park Film Festival in November 2015.
